Regular dental exams are necessary to prevent and treat any dental issues before they become a bigger health concern. At Sparkling Smile Dental San Jose we believe in ‘Saving Every Tooth’ as long as possible!

During a dental exam, we will check for any signs of decay (cavities) and gum disease. The exam will also include evaluating your risk of developing other oral problems and checking your face, neck and mouth for abnormalities. To check for hidden decay or other abnormalities, we take digital dental X-rays (radiographs) that give us a better look at the teeth and the surrounding bone.

At your first visit, we will also discuss your diet and oral hygiene habits and ways to improvise on them. Other topics we may discuss include lifestyle factors that can affect oral health and possible cosmetic improvements to your teeth.

We will also take a complete medical and dental history before the exam and discuss any significant findings. For example, some medications and chronic diseases can affect your dental health. Your dentist will want to know all of the medications you take since they may affect your mouth in certain ways and also influence the course of the treatment.

In most cases, we will recommend that you come in for a checkup every six months after the initial problems are taken care of. Depending on the severity of your dental health problems, we may recommend more frequent checkups and/or cleanings.

Limiting sugary treats and following good dental hygiene habits (brush twice and floss daily) along with regular check-ups and cleanings, help keep future problems to a minimum and help you retain your teeth longer with better function. So schedule your appointment today and enjoy a healthier, longer-lasting smile!
